To all the gurus of everything digital – have a look at people when you are on a bus, in a coffee shop or walking down the street. What are they doing, what are they holding and interacting with? The other day was almost a split mind moment looking around a waiting room, a flashback to the 2002 movie Minority Report: of the 15 people sitting next to tables of magazines, typical of any doctor or dentist’s office, almost all were actively using a Blackberry, iPhone, iPad or Kindle. More interesting, they were – male and female – well into middle age or older.
So it should come as no surprise when Arthur Sulzberger, the publisher of the New York Times says the paper would be digital only in the future. He did not set a date, but sources mention as early as 2015. Of course they will have to sort out revenue streams well beforehand.
